Letters to the Editor

Dear Peter - From John Rule

Dear Peter,
I thought your readers might like to know a thing or two about the so called Palma INTERNATIONAL Boat Show.
How they have the gall to call it international is a mystery. If it’s because many of the exhibits are foreign then a local mini-Eroksi would be within it’s rights to call itself an international food fair! International, in the context of exhibitions normally refers to the visitors. With this in mind it may interest you that, despite all the British Ensigns flapping around in the marinas around Mallorca, the British market seems of bugger all interest to the organisers!
Probably the biggest publisher of leisure craft magazines in the world, IPC, list in their fleet of titles- Yachting World; Yachting Monthly; Motor Boat and Yachting; Motor Boats along with Classic Boat and Practical Boat Owner. The combined circulation is a massive 160,988 copies per month.
How many had received a press release about the show from the organisers? Yep, you guessed…none! How many carried any ads to promote the show? Hey.. you’re right again..none!
Here’s a comment from Rob Peak, the editor of Motor Boat and Yachting; “We have received nothing or certainly next to nothing from the organisers themselves since I’ve been on this mag or Motor Boats Monthly, about five years in all. The micro-site: “palmaboatshow.com” was set up I believe because English speakers are so poorly catered for by the show organisers. Can’t tell you exactly about ads but I am sure I haven’t seen anything in our mag this year.”
Another point in question is why, unlike 99.9% of other boat shows around the world, are they not members of the International Federation of Boat Show Organisers? Could it possibly be that members have to have a proper audit on the attendance figures they publish!
Oh, nearly forgot to mention, it soaked up 200,000 euros worth of tax payers money! Your and my money! Why should we pay for some of it through tax and then be asked €6 entrance? Many shows have been cancelled this year because they were not economically viable- why not here?
I hear that the attendance was 22% down, so I guess that following the Balearic economic business model we can expect a 22% rise in the entrance fee next year!
Yours, John Rule
Eds note: According to Geoff Williamson who has run the “PalmaBoatShow” site for 3 years now, it was getting up to 1000 views per day leading up to the show. Full marks to Geoff, but can you imagine what demand there would be for a micro Monaco Yacht Show site??

The Palma International Boat Show achieves a better-than-expected volume of business.

The boating event closes its doors tonight at the Moll Vell trade fair complex in Palma
The Palma International Boat Show closes its doors tonight with "a level of business above expectations", according to the organisers of the floating event. The organisation has made a very positive assessment of this year's show after confirming that it has worked very well at a commercial level. It must not be forgotten that we are in a very difficult year and that the final results from other Spanish and international boating events were not very encouraging.

In general, the visitors to this 26th show have been much more interested in what was on offer. It seems that the fact that the Palma Boat Show is the last one to be held before the beginning of the boating season has benefited the event, as many buyers have waited until the last minute to make their final decisions. All this demonstrates that the Show is contributing to Palma being an important boating business centre.

Public attendance figures have fallen by 22% compared to the previous year, and about 36,200 people have passed through the Moll Vell Trade Fair Complex in Palma during the days of the show. The weather has not helped this year's Boat Show which, will, however, close its doors on a positive note.

The 26th Palma Boat Show has had 162 exhibitors, 202 companies represented and 310 boats afloat, occupying an area of 64,100 square metres. The most numerous sector has been boats, followed by boating equipment; services; boat building and maintenance; marine engines and generators; water sports; range of boating tourism; electronics and communication and navigation systems; marinas, ports and infrastructures; jet-skis and quad bikes; and official bodies.

The next Palma International Boat Show will be held from 24 April to 2 May by 2010. To promote it there will be direct commercial activities at events on the international calendar including Southampton, Cannes, Monaco, Barcelona, Paris and Dusseldorf, as well as at the main professional tourism fairs on the continent.

PALMA BOAT SHOW BRAVES THE CREDIT CRUNCH
STAFF REPORTER

PALMA
PALMA’S 26th International Boat Show opens today on the old quay in front of La Lonja on the Paseo Maritimo.
There are important changes this year because for the first time in the Boat Show’s history, the different sectors of the nautical industry will be exhibited separately, a move designed to accommodate professionals visiting the event which will remain open into May.

This prestigious fair, which - said the organisers yesterday - is “riding out the storm” of the economic crisis, will feature other novelties this year. Commerce Director, Pere Trias and Fairs and Congresses chief, Pere Perello said that the land and sea-based exhibition area has been increased by a further 2'400 square metres and that the area for luxury vessels along the Consigna quay has doubled the width of its floating jetties to five metres. There are three entrance areas to the Boat Show, one in front of the Ports Authority building, one in the dry dock and the other in the luxury vessel section.

Nevertheless, the layout of the Boat Show had to undergo last-minute changes after jetty P-3 had to be closed when structural deficiencies were discovered a few days ago. It has meant that 12 exhibitors and 70 mooring slots have had to be relocated elsewhere which demanded extra pressure for both organisers and companies, said Pere Trias. The Ports Authority had reportedly announced the closure of P-3 just as the boat show organisers were due to set up installations there. Those most affected by the realignment were sailing businesses “who have lost their separate sector status” added Trias, who explained that such vessels have been forced to share a space with other types of vessels on jetty P-2.

There are nevertheless 162 exhibitors at the Boat Show this year which entails participation by 202 businesses, and 310 vessels which will be on display afloat. The whole event will take up 64'100 square metres. According to the sector, the occasion is split into boating equipment, services, construction and maintenance, motors, generators, electronics and communication systems, and navigation. Separately, nautical sports will be a major feature at the show.

As a complement to the event, there will be ample representation from companies in the tourist boating industry, from those specialising in marinas and water sports installations as well as official governing bodies.

SEALINE

SEALINE UNVEILS NEW PREMIUM LINE OF LUXURY MOTOR YACHTS AT THE PALMA BOAT
SHOW.

At the 26th International Boat Show in Palma de Mallorca, Spain from 25th April to the 3rd May 2009,

SEALINE SALES SPAIN will unveil a brand new premium line of luxury motor yachts. The new series, to be known as AURA, combines spacious, high performance motor yachts with the very best of modern interior design. The first in the new AURA series is the flagship Sealine T60 and is the result of a unique collaboration between Sealine and Studio Conran.

Over three decades of creating superb motor yachts, Sealine have established a long tradition of craftmanship and innovation, with the T60 existing as the epitome of this philosophy. Now, with the T60 Aura, the distinctive and renowned Conran look has been united with functional inventiveness and a fresh design language.

Light and space are two of the true pleasures of being at sea. This sense of freedom continues in the interior of the T60 Aura creating its uplifting atmosphere. Natural oaks, light finishes and furnishings throughout create a bright freshness helping to bring the outside in. The experience is heightened by long clean lines and floating, linear forms redefining traditional spaces and blurring boundaries to create an open-plan interior that offers an airy, luxurious environment.

Commenting on the design collaboration Sebastian Conran said “working very closely with Sealine we have used every technique we know to make the T60 Aura feel special and spacious – offering the very best of modern design. The interior of any motor yacht presents a unique challenge for the designer. It is a rare environment in which performance, safety and practicality are equally as important as luxury and aesthetic beauty”. Recognised worldwide for their architecture, interior design, stylish shops and restaurants, Studio Conran has a diverse portfolio of design work which includes interiors for Concorde and Yotel compact hotel cabins.

Of special interest at the show this year will be the latest addition to the Sealine range of unique sports convertibles. Stylish and practical with a distinctive hull and contemporary design, the stunning new SC47 is fitted with Zeus drives for exceptional manoeuvrability. The super cool Sealine 35S sports convertible offers freedom with a wider beam accentuating the cockpit for an open and inviting experience. Spacious and light with crisp clean lines, be prepared to look at space in a whole new light.

Also showing is the innovative Sealine SC35 combining fun, style, practicality and price, plus the sporty Sealine SC29 coupe, and from the T – Series, we are proud to present the ever popular T50.

And there’s never been a better time to buy a new Sealine, thanks to the strength of the Euro against the British pound.

Palma Boat Show Preview from Motor Boat and Yachting Magazine.

The Palma Boat Show takes place from 25 April to 3 May.

There are no big launches announced this year but the pontoons will be lined with the latest models and plenty of major manufacturers are making an appearance.

Fairline, Princess, Sealine, Cranchi and Ferretti are some of the big names.

One interesting boat to see will be from local Balearics marque Menorquin, who will be unveiling their brand new 120.

The Mallorcan event offers a chance to see some of the top boats from February's Düsseldorf Boat Show and last autumn's Med exhibitions, in a more relaxed setting.

The Bavaria Deep Blue 46, launched to great acclaim at Düsseldorf, is one of the other boats at Palma.

Local photographer Geoff Williamson has put together a useful website about the show for English speakers.

Yates Alemanes / Bavaria Yachts

Yates Alemanes / Bavaria Yachts at Palma 2009.

Bavaria will be presenting two new models at Palma - the motor yacht Bavaria Deep Blue 46 and the sailing yacht Bavaria 55 Cruiser. The elegant Bavaria 55 Cruiser comes from a collaboration with the highly acclaimed Bruce Farr Yacht Design group. The dynamic motor yacht Deep Blue 46 is the first progeny of a new collaboration between Bavaria, Bruce Farr design and BMW Group Designworks in the USA. The product of this relationship, which combines visionary automotive design skills with proven yacht design features, has been well received by Bavaria clients and the nautical press. These new offerings from Bavaria will be presented in Spain during the Palma International Boat Show from the 25th of April till the 3rd of May.

Bavaria 55 Cruiser by Bruce Farr.

The new Bavaria 55 Cruiser is a beautiful 55-footer with a lot of volume – it is available in 3, 4 or 5-cabin versions. With a total length of 16,72 m the new Bavaria 55 Cruiser is 1,20 m longer and 25 cm wider than the second largest model in the range - the 51 Cruiser. The increase in size is apparent not only below deck but also in the larger foredeck sun bathing area (5 m in length), in the larger swimming platform (2 square metres) and in the larger stern dinghy garage. The dimensions of the cockpit are generous and allow up to 10 persons to sail and sit comfortably. For increased performance and safety the yacht is equipped with a double rudder system. The interior layout has been ingeniously designed to allow for reconfiguration options eg after charter to owner use with a switch from five to four cabins or from four to three cabins.

Bavaria Deep Blue 46 by BMW Group Designworks.

This new motor yacht from Bavaria is very new and very different. With a total length of 14,20 m this is the biggest power boat the shipyard has ever built and bears a distinctive appearance created by BMW Group Designworks USA. The Deep Blue had its world debut during the boatshow “boot” in Düsseldorf/Germany and will premiere in Spain at Palma 2009. She is available in three versions - as “Open”, “Sport Top” and “Flybridge”. The interiors are light and spacious and with generous cabin headroom of 2.10 m. Clients can choose between two or three cabin versions. The deck layout provides an abundance of seating and relaxing areas to enjoy the sun. A broad swimming platform and an integrated dinghy garage are provided - also an optional wetbar with barbecue. The yacht is equipped with very reliable Volvo-Penta D6 diesel engines with a choice of a 2 x 330 hp version or the more powerful option of 2 x 370 hp.

According to Margarita Dahlberg, President of The Balearic Nautical Business Association (AENB) - The Council of Mallorca have agreed to provide a 50% subsidy to offset the costs of exhibiting at this years Palma International Boat Show, which has seen a 2009 increase in the cost of display space in the order of 30%.

In order to qualify for the subsidy, companies will have to be operating in The Balearics and registered for business here. They will have to apply for it when booking their stand, and all the necessary paperwork will be handled by Fires i Congressos, the boat show organisers.

NEW PLANS FOR PALMA BOAT SHOW

After some criticism of the layout and promotional aspects of last years Palma Boat Show, some high level meetings have taken place involving the show organisers, the Port Authority, the Chamber of Commerce and the Balearics Nautical Business Association (AENB)

The President of AENB Margarita Dalhberg,  said that she was “determined to see improvements made and lessons learned from the past, that can really benefit all members of the leisure marine service industry in the region. And that she was “pleased to see their constructive input was being taken seriously.”
Next years show will be the 26th edition and will run from 25th April until 3rd of May at its usual Moll Vell location close to Palma cathedral.
Amongst the plans are an increase of 2500m2 in space allocation making a total display area of 30,000m2, which will include 1400 linear metres of dockage for the floating exhibits, providing berths for around 320 boats up to 50m in length.
Unlike last year the floating exhibition will not feature any boats of under 9m length, and the layout of the moorings will be planned to make sure that boats of a similar size are grouped together thus making viewing easier for visitors.
Also greater attention will be paid to sectorising the diverse types of water sport exhibits in a more logical layout plan. So for instance, all the sports fishing boats or marine electronic products can be  found in the same area of the showground.
Francesca Vives the Government Minister for Trade & Industry said that she “hopes these initiatives combined with better international promotion, will finally put Palma on the same level as boat shows like Genoa or Southampton.”
